Dear Spartan Families,
We hope you are enjoying the sunshine today! While your students are working hard on their expeditions projects, Sierra faculty are working on their own projects, including revamping our student orientation for next year, finalizing our academic and events calendar for next year, updating our grading policies, creating a plan to streamline our mentor, grade-level, and newsletter communications (specially about your student’s progress)
As students are doing amazing things this weekend! We encourage you all to come out to the Third Annual WeAPP Competition at Southshore K-8 today from 10:30-2:00pm. Here is a short video showcasing the amazing work of last year.
Also, our wonderful Frisbee team is playing a double-header today from 12:40-4:00pm in Shoreline (1st Ave NE and NE 185th St Shoreline, WA). If you are able, please come cheer our students on at either of these great events!
We are also so excited for our juniors to take their first AP test next Friday. We are so proud of the work our students and Mr. Crook have done to prepare students to do well on the AP US History test. We are invested in our students academic success, which is reflected in our decision to pay 100% of the $94 fee for students to test.
1. Students are expect to arrive ON-TIME (8:20 a.m.) and give their best effort. Students who arrive after testing has started, will not be permitted to test. There is no make-up testing for AP exams.
2. Breakfast will be served starting at 7:45 a.m. in order to feed all students, especially those who are testing.
3. Please bring a sharpened No. 2 pencil
Finally, please note that prom will be on Friday, May 25th (see more details below in the events). We are excited to see you all at the Celebration of Learning next Thursday. If you are willing to chaperone Prom, please email me. We need at least 6 parent chaperones.
Take good care,

May 17th Rally in Olympia
It is time to sign up for the May 17th rally in Olympia and show your support for Washington’s public charter schools!
On Thursday, May 17th, Summit Sierra students and families will have the opportunity to take a trip to Olympia to participate in a day of action and learning on Washington’s legislative campus.
- – Buses will leave from Summit Sierra at 7am sharp on Thursday, May 17th and will return around 2pm.
- – Students must be on track in all classes by Monday, May 14th to participate.
- – Students and parents interested in attending must fill out this google form to RSVP by May 9th, 2018.
- – Students who are interested in attending must have signed permission slips. Permission slips are available from Ms. Lopez at the front desk.
- – All attendees will wear Summit Sierra t-shirts.
- – Students will be supervised by chaperones during the entire day
- – Snack, lunch and water will be provided.
The day of action will take place the morning of May 17th, when the State Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments in a case that concerns the constitutionality of Washington’s charter school law. The case is part of an ongoing debate about charter public schools in the state. Over the past few years, Washington voters, state legislators, and local courts have each voted or ruled in favor of our sector, and we are optimistic about a similar outcome at the State Supreme Court.
Participants will be joined by 11 other charter schools, their students, teachers, parents, school leaders, and supporters in a show of support and solidarity for our sector that morning. Students will watch the hearing, participate in learning activities across the state’s legislative campus, and be provided lunch.
If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact Abigail Cedano, Head of Schools at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you for your support.

2017-2018 SPORTS PRACTICE SCHEDULE:
Unfortunately, we will not be able to have a soccer team this year. All practices are at Garfield are cancelled as of today. I deeply appreciate all of the interest we found in the student body and those of you that made it a priority to attend these practices.
I am excited that the interest that was created and all of the hard work done by Coach James means we will have two teams competing in the boys and girls leagues next school year and that there are already games scheduled for next Spring!!
I’m sure there will be some disappointment. If you would like to talk more about the team of if you have questions please reach out to Mr. Effland (firstname.lastname@example.org) directly.
Frisbee practices are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at Beacon Hill Playfield from 3:45 – 5:15pm.
Our team will be in a double header this weekend on May 5, 2018 from 1-4pm at 1st Ave NE and NE 185th St. Shoreline, WA

Please check in with juniors for their progress in their Sierra Method Online test prep program. Contact Ms. Nguyen at email@example.com for additional information.
