Summit Sierra: Wrapping Up Expeditions, Optional Early Release, December 1st, 2017

Summit Sierra: Wrapping Up Expeditions, Optional Early Release, December 1st, 2017

Dear Spartan Families,

I hope all of you had a restful and joyous Thanksgiving.  I was excited to see students dive deeply again into their Expeditions courses.  This week, we had the opportunity to see a great performance by our Hip Hop and Break Dancing class and saw many students create different art and media projects.  After closing another successful round of Expeditions, we’re looking forward to transitioning back to our academic core schedule starting Monday, December 4th.  The next round of Expeditions will start on February 5, 2018. If you have any questions about your student’s progress in Expeditions, please reach out to Ms. Nguyen at cnguyen@summitps.org.

Check out this great photo of 10th grader, Ky Carpenter, showcasing her photo essay from her Journalism & Photography Expedition Course –

Thank you,

L. Denice Randle
Assistant Director
Summit Sierra

Winter MAP Testing + Optional Early Release: December 13 – 14, 2017

On Wednesday, December 13 and Thursday, December 14, students will be completing their Winter MAP Tests.  The MAP Test measures students’ proficiency in reading and math.  Our faculty uses the information from these tests to align interventions for all students during their Summit Reads and Summit Solves classes.  We encourage all students to eat a balanced breakfast and get a good night’s rest before these tests.  Students also have an opportunity to earn early release on these days at 12:30pm if they have all As and Bs in their classes as signed off by their teachers.  Students who do not yet qualify for early release will receive targeted interventions with their teachers following the MAP test.  Please click here to download a copy of the Early Release Permission Slip.  Permission slips are due to Ms. Randle by 9:00am on Wednesday, December 12th.  For more information, please contact your student’s mentor.

Summit Theater: December 15, 2017

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a Winter celebration with their mentor groups on Friday, December 15th during Summit Theater from 1:25 – 3:30pm.  During this time, mentor groups will have the opportunity to enjoy a film of their choice together.  We encourage all students to bring snacks to share with their mentor group on that day.  We also invite all parents and families to donate any snacks for Summit Theater if they so choose.  For more information, please contact Ms. Temes at ltemes@summitps.org.

Inclement Weather Announcement

As a reminder to all families and community members, Sierra will follow Seattle Public Schools’ schedule in the event of inclement weather or school closure.  We will inform families of inclement weather via email post and our school website will be updated.

Meal Balance Announcement

MEAL BALANCES – New Meal Balances will be mailed home on Monday, 12/4.

We strive to be a school where all faculty spend 100% of our time directly or indirectly supporting students academically and emotionally. We attempt to make our operations as streamlined and efficient as possible so that these tasks don’t take our focus away from our students. When meal balances aren’t paid on time, Ms. Lopez has to spend her precious time following up with families multiple times to get these paid. If you have an outstanding meal balance, please pay it asap!
  • To check your child’s account balance please log into your My Meal Time account.
  • To make an online payment you may use My School Bucks.
  • You may also submit cash or checks, made payable to Summit Public Schools. Payment can be dropped off at the front desk.
If you believe your family may qualify for free or reduced priced lunch, please contact Ms. Lopez asap at tlopez@summitps.org.

Coat Drive

Summit Sierra will be collecting coat donations for the month of December.  Please bring in any donations you have to the front desk.  Coats will be donated to the Smiles at Christmas event.  For more information about the Coat Drive, please contact the following student leaders: Ashley Clark at aclark.si@mysummitps.org and Raleigh Haavig at rhaavig.si@mysummitps.org.

Little Saigon Ambassadors Food Drive

Many of our students this year have stepped up as leaders and joined the “Little Saigon Ambassadors” (LSA)–a student activity on campus dedicated to building positive connections with the local community in the Little Saigon neighborhood.  LSA’s first initiative is to conduct a food drive for the local food bank run by Asian Counseling and Referral Services.  All students, families, and community members are encouraged to donate canned goods and other nonperishables.  Students may give their donations directly to their mentor.  At the end of the food drive, the mentor group with the most donations will receive a class prize.

For more information about the food drive, please contact LSA President James Chen at jchen.si@summitps.org or Mr. Dacuan at ddacuan@summitps.org.
